I was lucky enough to grow up in Southern Africa and spent a lot of time in the African bush enjoying everything that it has to offer. After moving to the UK I found it difficult not having that escape, being able to go to the bush, reset and enjoy time in the wild, the true wild surrounded by raw nature. I’ve been actively seeking out wild places to go in the UK, looking for like minded people who I can spend time with doing the things I love.

I quickly realised that the most important thing that I needed to learn in the UK is local knowledge. This sounds obvious but it’s not until you’re in an unfamiliar wilderness area that you realise how much you need to learn about it. Everything about the environment is foreign including the sun path. This led me to the Survival School based in Devon. About two years ago I did my Level 2 Survival training and loved learning new survival techniques and meeting like minded people.

My survival knowledge for Africa is pretty good. Europe is a completely different environment, with different challenges. I wanted to improve my survival skills for Northern Hemisphere environments so enrolled for Level Three Applied Wilderness Skills training in Scotland with the Survival School.

During the week we learned safe cutting techniques, intense firelighting with the emphasis on lighting fires in wet weather including making a fire shelter (it’s Scotland so fires need to be protected from the rain), individual camp set up, game preparation (deer, trout and wood pigeon), axe proficiency, jerky (biltong) production, charcloth production, advanced fire lighting, water purification, 101 things to do with a conifer – from root to needle (eat it, drink it, build it, glue it, light it), making traps and snares, shepherds sling and carving a wooden spoon and a bull roarer. The balance between lessons and personal time to do what we needed to do was excellent with just enough time for both.

The instructors were brilliant, experts in their respective fields with deep, personal, practical knowledge of their subjects. It was a privilege to learn from them.

The Survival School was founded by Jonny Crocket who still personally runs many of the courses. Yes, he is family of the famous Davey Crocket, King of the Wild Frontier.
