Feeding people in the wild is always an interesting challenge, especially when it includes kids with very particular preferences.

We tried two well known brands of dehydrated food, Firepot and Trekmates Adventure Food, as well as show how to cook them using a small hiking gas stove from a bushcraft shelter in a tree in the woods in England, United Kingdom.

As with many things in life, there was no clear winner! The Sloth loved Trekmates Adventure Food Pasta Bolognaise while the Bear loved Firepot’s Chilli Con Carne with Rice, that was a little too burny (chilli) for the Sloth. Different tastes for different palettes. Both were quick and easy to prepare with the Pasta Bolognaise ready a little quicker. We’d buy and eat both again.

Purpose made dehydrated food tends to be a little on the pricey side and these are no exception. Go Outdoors has an annual membership card for £5 per year that entitles you to ongoing and seasonal discounts. They frequently run deals on meals like ‘Buy 1 get 1 half price’ that helps when stocking up.

The Sloth & the Bear are identical twin brothers with a thirst for fun and adventure. Their Dad (the Wolf) doesn’t need any convincing to get outdoors and go wild! Away from screen time is dream time!

Outdoor life is an essential part of our lifestyle and learning the bushcraft and survival skills needed for an outdoor lifestyle is both essential to this and a lot of fun! Outdoor play rewilds both kids and their parents or carers, rewilding people who in turn care about, protect and restore Nature and the environment. We are a part of, not apart from Nature. Without Nature there is no us. Simply spending time in Nature is excellent for mental health, for both children and adults. A simple walk in natural surroundings lifts mood, helping to focus on what’s truly important in life.

Children are naturally curios by nature. Encouraging them to spend time in Nature develops their natural curiosity enabling them to learn through play, having fun at the same time. It also helps them develop their gross and fine motor skills, as well as learning to use their senses.
